Villages
- Baneuil village, church and château · Hilltop village on your doorstep · Rue du Donjon / Rue des Tilleuls, 24150 Baneuil
A two-minute stroll from the house: the 12th-century Église Saint-Étienne and, right beside it, the Château de Baneuil, an 11th–16th-century castle with a square keep and a round tower that once watched over the Dordogne and Couze valleys. The village sits on a ridge at about 140 m, so the lanes around it give long views south over the river valley. There is a small picnic area in the village.
Tip: The château is a private home (listed monument): admire it from the lane; it has opened to visitors in some past summers, but no 2026 dates are published. Church usually viewed from outside. Allow 20–30 minutes; fine with a pushchair on the village lanes. - Saint-Capraise-de-Lalinde · Former river port on the canal · 24150 Saint-Capraise-de-Lalinde
A small former barge port with a Romanesque church, a canal aqueduct, a mooring basin and a dry dock (all listed), plus a dovecote by the canal. Pleasant for a short wander or as a stop on the greenway, with a picnic area and the Bistrot Saint-Capraise facing the church.
Tip: About 3 km west. Free parking in the village. Flat; fine for pushchairs around the village and along the towpath. - Lalinde bastide and Thursday market · First English bastide · market Thu 8am–1pm · Place de la République, 24150 Lalinde

Walk down to the public gardens for views of the river and bridge. On Thursday mornings the market fills the square and the streets by the town hall: duck, chicken, strawberries in season, wine, crafts and clothes.
Tip: Market every Thursday all year, 8am–1pm (busiest in July–August); arrive by 9.30 to park easily. 4 km from the house. Shops, cafés, bakeries, pharmacies and cash machines are all on or near the square. Flat and pushchair-friendly. - Badefols-sur-Dordogne and its Friday market · Riverside village · market Fri 5–7.30pm · Le Bourg, 24150 Badefols-sur-Dordogne
A protected little village on the south bank, with the ruins of its castle, the 1714 church of Saint-Vincent and a doorway dated 1548, looking across the river to Lalinde and Mauzac. On Friday evenings a small producers' market sets up: cheese, vegetables, honey, cider, local beef and wild-boar sausages, crêpes and cakes.

One of France's 'Plus Beaux Villages': steep lanes of honey-coloured houses climbing from the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère, with craft workshops, cafés by the old bridges and the panoramic gardens at the top. The river beach at the bottom is good for paddling.
Tip: Park in the riverside car parks at the bottom (paid in summer) and walk up. No regular market; go in the morning or early evening in July–August to avoid the crowds. Allow 1–2 hours, more with the gardens. - Trémolat & the Cingle · Village on the great river loop · 24510 Trémolat

Start at Place de la Bourse and its Miroir d'eau, the huge shallow water mirror that children love to splash through, then walk the riverside quays with their gardens, play areas and cycle paths. From there, wander up the pedestrian rue Sainte-Catherine for shopping, and on to the Grosse Cloche gate, Saint-André cathedral and the Pey-Berland tower, with plenty of café terraces in the Saint-Pierre quarter on the way.
Tip: Special day trip, about 100 km away: allow a full day. BY CAR: about 1 h 30 (via Bergerac, the D936 through Castillon-la-Bataille and Libourne, then the A89). Saint-Émilion is just off this route, so it is easy to combine with a morning or late-afternoon stop there. Don't drive into the centre: use a tram park-and-ride (Parcs relais) on the edge of the city, e.g. La Buttinière in Lormont (601 spaces, right where the A89 meets the ring road) or Galin, both on tram line A, about 20 minutes to the centre. The P+R ticket covers the day's parking plus a tram return for the people in the car (a few euros; check infotbm.com). P+R sites open 5:00–1:00 (to 2:00 Thu–Sat); don't leave the car outside tram hours (€15 fine). BY TRAIN: TER from Lalinde (about 1 h 35, roughly 8 direct trains a day) or Bergerac (about 1 h 15–1 h 20) to Bordeaux Saint-Jean, roughly €12–25 one way; check times on ter.sncf.com (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) or the SNCF Connect app, as timetables change. Children enjoy the climb and the lifts; combine with the Rocher des Aigles or the Forêt des Singes for a full day.

The classic family ride is Port de Couze to Mauzac (about half a day with stops), with a riverside picnic spot at La Guillou and the seasonal Mauzac river shuttle at the end.
Tip: Port de Couze is 2.5 km from the house. Surface: some tarmac, mostly compacted gravel, a few grassy bits towards Mauzac; fine for bikes and sturdy pushchairs.
